DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS ALGEBRA AND COMBINATORICS SEMINAR 12 NOON THURSDAY 11 NOVEMBER 2004 in 67-641 Techniques for embedding partial Steiner triple systems: Part 1 Darryn Bryant Department of Mathematics, University of Queensland Abstract The embedding problem for partial Steiner triple systems asks if it is true that any partial Steiner triple system of order u can be embedded in a Steiner triple system of order v whenever v = 1 or 3 (mod 6) and v is at least 2u+1. The problem dates back to the early 1970s. This is part 1 of a series of informal talks on the problem. The intention is to give a historical overview of various constructions that have been used to obtain results on the problem. All welcome. ------------------- Part 2 will continue on this topic, on WEDNESDAY 24 November 2004, at 12 noon in 67-641. ------------------- Part 3 will continue on WEDNESDAY 1 December 2004, at 2pm in 67-641. ^^^ ------------------- Part 4 will continue on WEDNESDAY 8 December 2004 at 11am in 67-641. ^^^^ ---------------------
